About the artist

Born in 1951, Christopher Curtis grew up in ski town, Stowe, Vermont in a very much out of doors way.  He began his affection for stone at a young age, collecting stones from age 5. In high school he attended night classes in welding to use making sculpture.  At the University of Vermont, he began stone cutting in earnest under the guidance of mentor, Paul Aschenbach.  Aschenbach insisted that his students develop a broad physical vocabulary, which pushed Curtis to self learn a wide variety of sculptural techniques and skills.  Upon graduation in 1974, Curtis mounted his first solo show, “Floating Stones” at the Francis Colburn Gallery.

Later, Aschenbach’s wise observation of the abundance of economical stone in Vermont  moved Curtis into working with large boulders.  Some of these were featured in a 2018 solo show at the Tulsa Botanic Garden.

In 2000, Curtis and Tari Swenson, his wife launched West Branch Gallery and Sculpture Park in Stowe, which they operated until selling it in 2018.

In 2010, Curtis began experimenting with CAD for use in sculpture.  This direction allowed the creation of complex shapes in metal and eventually to 3D printing and 3D VR displays of sculpture.

Today Curtis maintains a studio in Duxbury, VT in a renovated 1820 sawmill on an always flowing stream.
