About the artist
Rob Ley’s art practice is a continuous exploration of how form, materiality, and motion intersect to create moments for interaction and reflection. By engaging the character and context of a location, his works consider how science and natural phenomena are understood and subsequently represented. A recurring focus in Ley’s work is an interest in the aggregation of elements and compositions that can be interpreted in a multitude of ways. Often, a viewer’s experience of his work will change dramatically over time or depending on their perspective.
Throughout his career, Ley has received numerous accolades, including the Americans for the Arts -Public Art Network Year in Review award and a Graham Foundation grant. He was also recognized with the Best Storefront Design award by the Municipal Art Society of New York. His studio's innovative projects include commissions for prominent institutions such as the Martin Luther King Hospital in Los Angeles, the Washington DC Metropolitan Area Transit Authority at Potomac Yard Metro Station, O' Hare Airport in Chicago, the Oregon Zoo in Portland, and Amazon’s new Headquarters 2 in Arlington, VA.
Ley is an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California (USC), where he teaches graduate and undergraduate studios on form and material effects. His expertise in public art, design, technology, and innovation has led to international lectures and exhibitions at prestigious institutions including the Cooper Union in New York, the American Institute Vienna in Austria, and the RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia.
